Book Your SailThe Short Answer
Wondering what to wear sailing? Dress in comfortable layers, wear soft-soled shoes that grip a wet deck, and bring sun protection. You don't need special sailing clothes. Everyday outdoor clothes work fine, as long as you can add or remove a layer as the wind and sun change.
It's almost always cooler on the water than on land, especially once the afternoon breeze builds or the sun goes down. When in doubt, bring one more layer than you think you need.
Dress in Layers
Base layer
A comfortable T-shirt or long-sleeve top. Light, breathable fabrics keep you comfortable in the sun.
Warm layer
A sweater, fleece or hoodie for when the breeze picks up or the sun dips behind the clouds.
Outer layer
A light windbreaker or water-resistant jacket blocks the wind and the occasional splash of spray.
Shorts are fine on a warm day sail, but pack long pants or leggings for an evening on the water.
The Best Shoes for Sailing
Shoes matter more than anything else you wear on a sailboat. A deck can be wet and it moves, so you want grip and a secure fit.
- Best: sneakers or boat shoes with light-colored, non-marking rubber soles.
- Okay: sport sandals with a strap around the back of the heel.
- Avoid: heels, flip-flops and hard or dark-soled shoes. They slip, fall off or leave marks on the deck.
Protect Yourself From the Sun
On the water you get sun from above and glare reflected off the surface, so it's easy to burn even on a cool or hazy day.
- Sunscreen: put it on before you arrive, and bring some along on longer sails.
- A hat that stays on: a snug fit or a chin strap, because wind loves loose hats.
- Sunglasses: polarized lenses cut the glare off the water. A strap keeps them from going overboard.
What to Wear for Each Type of Sail
Day sail
Light layers, a hat, sunglasses and sunscreen. Bring a light jacket for the afternoon breeze.
Sunset sail
Plan for cooler air as the sun sets: long pants, a warm layer and a windproof jacket.
4-hour wildlife sail
Pack for both: sun protection for the start, warm layers for later, and comfortable shoes for moving around the deck.
What to Leave at Home
- Long scarves and loose accessories that can blow away or catch on lines.
- Valuables you'd hate to drop overboard. Keep your phone in a zipped pocket.
- Hard-sided bags. A small soft bag or backpack stows easily on board.
- Slippery or hard-soled shoes, for the reasons above.

What to Wear Sailing: FAQ
Do I need special clothes to go sailing?
No. Comfortable everyday clothes in layers work well for a day or sunset sail. The most important things are soft-soled shoes and a warm layer.
Can I wear flip-flops on a sailboat?
It's best not to. Flip-flops slip on a wet deck and fall off easily. Sneakers, boat shoes or sandals with a heel strap are safer.
Will I get wet when I go sailing?
On a calm bay you'll usually stay dry, apart from the occasional bit of spray. A light water-resistant jacket takes care of that.
Is it cold on a sailboat?
It's usually cooler on the water than on land, because of the breeze. Bring a warm layer, especially for a sunset sail. Blankets are on board too.
