The Short Answer

The cost to go sailing depends mostly on one choice: sharing the boat, or having it to yourselves. On San Diego Bay with us, a shared sail starts at $109 per person, and a private charter for up to six guests starts at $259 for the whole boat.

Here's how the different ways to go sailing compare, and what changes the price.

Ways to Go Sailing and What Each Costs

Shared sail

Join a small group on a scheduled trip. Priced per person, so it's the most affordable way to go sailing on your own or as a couple.

Private charter

The whole boat and captain for your group. Priced per boat, so the cost per person drops as your group grows.

Sailing lessons

Hands-on instruction from a licensed captain, usually priced per session for a small number of students.

Renting a sailboat

Only for experienced sailors. Rental companies usually ask for proof of experience or certification, plus a deposit.

Sailing club

For people who sail often. Clubs typically charge a joining fee plus monthly dues for access to their boats.

Is a Private Charter Worth It?

For groups, usually yes. Three shared seats on a day sail cost $327, while a private 2.5-hour day sail starts at $259 for the whole boat. For a sunset sail, three shared seats cost $357, exactly the same as having the whole boat to yourselves.

With a full boat of six, a private day sail works out to under $50 per person, including taxes and fees. Traveling solo or as a couple? A shared sail is the better value, and you'll meet fellow sailors on board.

What Affects the Cost to Go Sailing

  • Shared or private. Shared trips are priced per person; private trips are priced per boat.
  • Trip length. A 4-hour wildlife sail costs more than a 2.5-hour day sail, and gives you more time to explore.
  • Group size. On a private trip, the more guests you bring (up to six), the less each person pays.
  • Time of day. Sunset sails cost a little more than day sails, on both shared and private trips.
  • What's included. Our trips include soft drinks, water, snacks, blankets, Bluetooth music and all safety gear, so there are no surprise extras on board.
